Hugh Widdup is a woodturner who balances creativity and elegance with function. Hugh employs the finest materials in his work, ranging from beautifully figured local and exotic woods, to salt and pepper mill mechanisms that are guaranteed for life, to the finest badger hair for his shaving brushes. Quality, an eye for detail, and sense of timeless design are all key characteristics of Hugh’s hand-turned work. Hugh is an active member of the Golden Horseshoe Woodturning Guild (GHWG), Toronto Woodturning Guild (TWG), and the American Association of Woodturners (AAW).  In fact, in 2010 and 2013 he received Certificates of Appreciation from the GHWG in recognition of the time and expertise he has provided to the Guild!

Hugh makes one-of-a-kind and custom home and kitchen items, custom turned, balusters, spindles, newel posts, custom railings, table legs, chair legs, chair stretchers, and offers lessons, workshops, and lathe rentals. All reproduction turning is hand, without using a copying attachment. Custom restoration work can be recreated from an original sample or using supplied drawings, in quantities from 1 offs to large orders of hundreds at a time. .

CUSTOM RESTORATION & PROTOTYPE TURNING

Contact Hugh if you need custom-created or matched pieces. Hugh has made spindles, newel posts, finials, table and chair legs, you name it – if it can be done on a lathe, Hugh can make it! He can match complex shapes by eye (he does not use a replicator) allowing you to retain the original handmade elegance of your historic or heirloom item.

LESSONS & LATHE RENTALS

Hugh is also a woodturning instructor, teaching students from their teens up to their retirement years! Hugh even instructs visually-impaired students. One-on-one lessons are $50/hour (plus HST; there may be a cost for materials) and customized to each student’s individual goals. Or, for a one-time woodturning experience, interested novices may wish to buy a half day Make Your Own experience where you can make a pepper mill or 10″ bowl. Click here for more information. Experienced woodturners can also rent lathe time – click on the Schedule Lathe Time page for more information.
